Energy Star®
Frequently Asked Questions

What is HERS?

Home Efficiency Rating System, an arm of the EPA. Check the RESNET (Residential Energy Services Network, an independent organization assigned by the EPA as the supervisory group for the HERS program) site for the official definition.

How does this compare to the Energy Star Program?

Both are through the EPA; however, HERS has much more strict guidelines than for the Energy Star program. Beyond just purchase of energy star appliances, insulation and lighting fixtures, HERS requires actual testing of the home to determine its efficiency ratings.

How is this testing being performed?

A “blower door test” checks for air infiltration, duct leakage, verifies on-site the furnace and AC, water heater, proper insulation and sealing of the building envelope.

Who performs this testing?

Cenergy performs all home testing for Jerry’s Homes. They are an outside, 3rd party independent certified rater by RESNET.

What homes are being tested?

All Jerry’s Homes will have an actual test and rating sheet. Whereas, some builders will test one home and use those results for all similar homes, we confirm the results for each and every home.

What does the star rating number mean?

Start at 500 and take off points for items better than the reference home. The lower the number, the tighter the home. A zero home uses no energy at all. Most Jerry’s Homes score in the 60’s.

What is the standard reference home?

It is an international standard. Specifically, the Standard Reference Design Home is specified in section 404 of the IECC (International Energy Conservation Code) 2004 supplement. This is the benchmark by which all testing is done.
